A histochemical property of the oxyphil cells of the human parathyroid glands.

چکیده
Parathyroid glands were removed from routine necropsy cases, being mainly elderly subjects of both sexes. Gelatine-embedded blocks of formalin-fixed and post-chromed tissue were prepared and stained by Baker's (1946) acid-haematin technique for the histochemical detection of phopholipids. Near-by sections (although not strictly serial) were stained by haematoxylin and eosin. In each case a second parathyroid gland was treated as for Baker's pyridineextraction-acid-haematin test. It would have been preferable to bisect a single gland and treat one half by the first part and the other by the second part of Baker's test, but, so far, glands of sufficient size have not been available. No attempt was made to make a quantitative study of the number of cells rich in phospholipid granules in each parathyroid gland examined.

Ultrastructure of the parathyroid gland.
Since the first detailed description of the parathyroid glands, reported in human beings by Sandstrom in 1880, and Lever first described the ultrastructure of the parathyroid chief cells of rat in 1957, a large number of histological and ultrastructural studies have been done on the parathyroid glands of numerous animal species under normal and experimental conditions. The biological function o...
متن کاملMitochondrial DNA mutations in oxyphilic and chief cell parathyroid adenomas
BACKGROUND The potential pathogenetic significance of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) mutations in tumorigenesis is controversial. We hypothesized that benign tumorigenesis of a slowly replicating tissue like the human parathyroid might constitute an especially fertile ground on which a selective advantage conferred by mtDNA mutation could be manifested and might contribute to the oxyphilic phenotype...
متن کاملResponse of Ultimobranchial and Parathyroid Glands of the Indian Skipper Frog, Euphlyctis cyanophlyctis to Cadmium Toxicity
Background: Cadmium toxicity has been shown in aquatic animals but the effect on frog’s endocrine glands is not known. We investigated the effects of cadmium on ultimobranchial and parathyroid glands of Indian skipper frog, Euphlyctis cyanophlyctis. Methods: Frogs were exposed to cadmium chloride for short and long terms and sacrificed after 24, 48, 72 or 96 h (short-term) and after 5, 10, 1...
متن کاملPredictors of an accurate preoperative sestamibi scan for single-gland parathyroid adenomas.
OBJECTIVE To investigate why some patients with single parathyroid adenomas have negative preoperative sestamibi scans. DESIGN Retrospective review. SETTING Tertiary care center. PATIENTS Twenty-one patients with false-negative (FN) scans were compared with 22 patients with true-positive (TP) scans. All patients had single parathyroid adenomas. INTERVENTIONS Neck exploration and removal...
متن کاملAn Update on the Structure of the Parathyroid Gland
The parathyroid glands hold a special place in human anatomy, since they were the last major organ to be recognized by humans. The glands are recognized in all vertebrate animals higher than fish, and are derived from the pharyngeal pouches. The molecular signaling pathways that are involved in determining the differentiation of the glands are being elucidated. Studies in mice have demonstrated...
